  1. Massage therapy training programs require participants to have at least a high school diploma or equivalent and conduct in-person interviews as part of the application process.
  2. It is highly recommended that you apply to a program accredited by the Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation
  3. Some schools offer short introductory courses so that prospective students can get a feeling for the school’s teaching style. This, visiting programs and setting up meetings are just a few of the steps you should use to pick a school.
  4. The American Massage Therapy Association, the largest non-profit professional association for massage therapists, has a student level membership for those who are interested in getting involved in the industry while they’re still training.
  5. Depending on the institution, students may need to fulfill 500 to 1,000 hours of training and education.
  6. Licensing requirements can vary greatly from state to state. States’ licensing requirements can even vary from city to city. Knowing the licensing requirements for where you choose to practice is very important.
  7. Massage therapists also need to pass an entry-level exam in order to qualify for licensure in most states.  This exam is called the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Exam and is administered by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards.  
  8. Even after completing their studies, many massage therapists partake in continuing education programs.
  9. Massage therapists work in a variety of environments including airports, hospitals, nursing homes and fitness centers.
  10. Massage therapists can operate as self-employed practitioners or as commissioned employees among many other options.

Starting out in the massage therapy industry can be very exciting. Many therapists have the ability to set their own schedules and get to travel both nationally and internationally for their work.
