An adventure into yourself, using the gentle guided movement explorations of the Feldenkrais Method

In Chinese, the character for “breath” means “of the conscious self or heart.” In Greek, “psyche pneuma” meant breath/soul/air/spirit. In Latin, “anima spiritus meant breath/soul. Why is “breath” represented in these ways in language? Why has breath been studied by mystics, while poets have been inspired, and lovers were breathless?

The breath is a bridge between the voluntary and the involuntary nervous system, as a function that is usually under involuntary control, but can be consciously controlled when we wish. Full breathing massages the abdominal organs, as it mobilizes the muscles and bones with a gentle range of motion. Stress is decreased, and blood pressure is lowered.

Join us in an exploration of the breath! We will do a variety of guided sequences involving self-palpation, movement, and breath. The goal is not to learn the prescribed “right” way to breathe, but for each to find his or her own deep and nourishing breath. Learning is painless, through fascinating investigations of movement and casual discussion. The class includes:

  • Lecture/discussion of anatomy and physiology of the breath.
  • Effects of full vs. restricted breathing in cervical, thoracic, shoulder, and lumbar pain as well as general health.
  • Rhythm of breathing and its relationship to stress and the autonomic nervous system.
  • Relationship of lumbar movement to rib and respiratory diaphragm movement.

No massage technique is practiced: focus in on self-care, anatomy, and kinesiology. This qualifies for 6 “hands-on” CE units for Florida and NCBTMB. There is no prerequisite.

Exercises will be done on a carpeted floor; students may wish to bring a mat or towel.  There will be an hour for lunch.

This class is open to and appropriate for the general public.
