Workshop Description:

Let’s face it. We didn’t get a lot of information about skin diseases in school. And learning about skin diseases “on the job” is crazy stressful and potentially dangerous. So why not let me help you learn about the most common skin diseases encountered in the massage clinic?

In this fun and “intriguingly gross” class, we will discuss common skin conditions, such as ringworm, eczema, psoriasis, warts, herpes (YES- your client may have herpes!), skin cancer, and many others conditions.

Each condition is demonstrated visually by multiple PowerPoint® slides, or “live” by examining local volunteers. Diseases are discussed with reference to prevalence, signs/symptoms, treatment, and indications/contraindications, and last but not least, what should we do with a client that has a contagious skin disease?  No – running from the room is the wrong answer.

Participants will discuss and view photos of:

  • Common skin conditions arising from bacterial, fungal and viral infections (Saturday class)
  • Benign general conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, seborrhea (Saturday class)
  • Skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma (Sunday class)

Please bring:

  • Your lunch, snacks, and drinks. (We only have a 30-minute lunch break; please bring your lunch, snacks and drink.) Note- Florida School of Massage is not located near restaurants and convenience stores.
  • Pen and paper (for note-taking). Available for purchase is the popular book: Infectious and Communicable Skin Diseases: A Pocket Guide for Massage Therapists ($35).

**Please note: This is primarily a lecture/discussion class with Instructor-lead hands-on demonstrations. Do not bring table. Sheets, tables and lube will be provided.
