Workshop Description:

Low back pain affects 80% of people at some point in their lives. In the United States it is the most common cause of job-related disability, and a leading contributor to missed work. 90% of low back pain is due to muscular or other soft tissue strain or sprain, and is not caused by any serious musculoskeletal or neurological disorder.  Therefore, becoming more effective in helping those who are suffering from this ailment can lead to your success as a massage practitioner.  And, learning to ease your own back discomfort can prolong your career.

We will use the gentle movement explorations of the Feldenkrais Method® to learn to coordinate our flexors and extensors, distribute effort throughout the entire back musculature, soothe the muscles, and re-organize our brains for more efficient posture and movement.  Class lecture/discussion will include the anatomy and physiology of low back pain, sciatica, and herniated discs, as well as discussion of core strength and co-contraction.  Emphasis will be on anatomy, physiology, and self-care. There will be no practice of massage technique.  Active assisted range of motion technique, based on the principles discussed, will be demonstrated.

This qualifies for 6 “hands-on” CE units for Florida and NCBTMB. There is no prerequisite.

Exercises will be done on a carpeted floor; students may wish to bring a mat or towel, and wear comfortable clothes for movement.  Students should be able to lie on the floor and come to standing with little or no assistance.

This class is open to and appropriate for the general public.
