Structural Integration Returns!by Mary Santello, LMT Structural Integration, as an advanced training available at FSM, has been on sabbatical for the last few years. We are pleased to announce its resurrection and return in 2003, just in time for the renewal year! The Florida School of Massage has a long standing tradition with the perspectives and principles that comprise the paradigm of Structural Integration, an amazing and effective somatic therapy model developed by Ida Rolf. Since Ida Rolf first developed Structural Integration, the work has continued to be fine-tuned as many dedicated individuals have added their vision, wisdom and expertise to evolve this potent vehicle for personal growth, wellness, healing and well-being. Structural Integration is an advanced version of the Connective Tissue Therapy that is taught in the basic program here at FSM. It is the very same ten-session Rolfing model that Ida Rolf conceived, practiced and taught. Traditionally, sessions one through three are referred to as the “sleeve” sessions, which cover the more extrinsic musculature. Session one focuses on the Breath; two covers the foundation of the foot and low leg; and three addresses the whole side line of the body. Sessions four through six are referred to as the “core” sessions which cover the deepest core musculature of the spine and pelvis. Session four covers the adductors and pelvic floor; session five is the psoas and quadricep; and session six covers the posterior pelvic muscles of the glutes, deep rotators and the hamstrings. Session seven traditionally addressed the neck and head. In this training, session seven is offered in two parts: 7A - the neck, and 7B - the cranium. Sessions eight through ten are designed as “integrative” sessions, a time to go back to areas of the body previously covered that may need more attention. These sessions are therefore unique to each client as they will be individually tailored to meet your client’s needs. In 2003 we are offering a new, updated format. Many of us at FSM who have trained and practiced SI know it as a powerful agent of change for human beings. Within the traditional ten sessions that Ida Rolf conceived, there is so much valuable information and technique…enough to last literally a lifetime. Many who have practiced this work find that they end up using the work, theory and techniques ALL the time, rather than following a strict order to the series. Therefore, as much as the traditional ten session series is valuable, so too is the wealth of the abundant techniques found within each individual session. In light of this, we are embracing a new format which will allow you, the practitioner, to draw on this abundance, letting it infuse your work to the great benefit and well-being of your clients and practice. What has been created will be very user friendly for the renewal year. What has not changed is the heart and spirit in which this work has been and will continue to be offered. This training is about whole person therapy. This training is about honoring process, and honoring the body’s own innate ability to find and sustain balance, ease, and healing. Structural Integration at the Florida School of Massage is a somatic therapy offered in the spirit of curiosity, exploration, facilitation, and learning for the body, mind, heart and spirit. So come one and all! Juice up your practice, knowledge, and income and get aligned with Structural Integration!
